York Stage 'Calendar Girls' Review

Updated: Jun 22, 2022

Last Night (22/4/22) - I had the privilege of being invited to the press night of York Stage's production of 'Calendar Girls the Musical' at the Grand Opera House, York!

This was my first time seeing a York Stage production and to keep it simple, I was blown away!

The whole cast brought a wonderful energy and you could see the joy on each and every one of their faces as they told this local story to their audience. The opening number 'Yorkshire' introduced some of the characters and really set the tone for the show. From the moment the curtain raised you could really see the bond the cast had and their chemistry really gave the village of 'Knapley' such a warm community feeling.

Before I mention cast performances and go into more detail, I would like to praise Louie Theaker who stepped in to play the role of 'Tommo' with only one hour of rehearsal! It is incredible to see people doing such amazing things to keep theatre going.

The show as a whole was fabulous. I laughed, cried and then laughed some more. Calendar Girls really takes you on an emotional rollercoaster. With music by Gary Barlow & Tim Firth I wasn't surprised that every song was so well written but the beautiful performances of their work is what made this piece shine.

Jo Theaker in the role of 'Annie' was the perfect casting choice. The raw emotion poured out through the show was both heartbreaking and heartwarming and as we saw her character go through the feelings, we felt them too. Not forgetting to mention Jo's strong and delightful singing, powering through some really emotional numbers.

Julieann Smith played Annie's best friend 'Chris'. The chemistry these two performers had on stage was such a joy to watch. Julieann's performance was another standout for me. Her comedic timing was impeccable and her vocals were superb.

Every single member of the cast put their all into this production. Tracey Rea as Celia brought another fabulous element of comedy and style. Rosy Rowley as Cora, played the role beautifully with so much energy. Sandy Nicholson in the role of Jessie was wonderful and really funny too. Juliet Waters gave a wonderful portrayal of Ruth, making one of my favourite moments in the performance with her "Russian Friend".

Mick Liversidge played the role of 'John'. Mick gave a heart-wrenching performance of a selfless man going through cancer treatment which was performed so beautifully and really had me emotional.

Sam Roberts and Izzie Norwood playing 'Danny' and 'Jenny' respectively were both fantastic performers, both playing their characters wonderfully and I can't wait to see where they take their careers from this point!

Andy Stone, Finn East, Louise Leaf, Craig Kirby, Maggie Smales, Graham Smith, Alison Taylor, Liz Somers and Rhian Wells completed the company, who I all felt deserved a mention as each and every person gave their all!

As well as the performance, The set was particularly wonderful. Designed by the show's director Nik Briggs. I thought that the set was perfect for all aspects of the show, giving it a nice fresh feel and bringing the audience into the village of 'Knapley'.

Overall I think that this show is a must see if you are in the area. York Stage are performing Calendar Girls at the Grand Opera House York until Saturday 30th April!
