Hope has a Happy Meal | Tom Fowler

Hope has a Happy Meal, opened last weekend at the Royal Court Jerwood Theatre Upstairs and runs until 8th July 2023.

In an interview, director Tom Fowler described the show as "a magical realist fairy tale about a woman called Hope returning to the People’s Republic of Koka Kola to find the family she left behind twenty-four years ago. In other words, the play is an allegorical quest story about ‘hope’ trying to come back."

Fowler came up with the premise for the play in 2016 when participating in a writer's group at the royal court. It was at a time when the UK was leaving the EU and Donald Trump was Elected President of the US, Fowler says " I heard a lot of people talk about hope as if it had just disappeared overnight. It was from this that I conceived the idea of writing about a woman called Hope trying to come home. "

Fowler describes the process of writing the play as "hard and long", he states that "it was a process of me, educating myself and, ultimately, becoming more confidently socialist."

The show is currently running at the Royal Court, fowler says that "the cast and creative team are all brilliant" - This show seems really special and Is definitely something new to catch if you're able to!

Tom Fowler, after writing this play back in 2016, says that "the play is firmly rooted in now and the politics of the last five years" which means that anybody who goes to see it can have a connection with it! However... Fowler also says " it being set in the People’s Republic of Koka Kola (rather than Britain) there’s a detachment that hopefully makes it feel a little more universal."

'Hope Has a Happy Meal" running at the Royal Court has always been a goal of Fowler's and now that the show is finally open, he is " very excited to finally share the play."
