Last Night, I had the pleasure of attending the Press Night of 'Heathers' at the Yvonne Arnaud in Guildford. It had been far too long since seeing this show, and this cast were a good a reason as any to return again and again.
From the off this show brings a very energetic and exciting ensemble. This cast really compliment each other and each performer brings something new and interesting to the production and the well loved characters.
Jenna Innes plays a magnificent Veronica. Her vocals are unmatched and she brought a wonderful charisma to the character which is required for her audience interaction.
Jacob Fowler brings a unique take on Jason Dean (JD). Fowler's spin gives us a overly calm and strangely reserved character - which many of the show's fans (known as the corn nuts) would recognise is not what JD is known for. I feel this new idea brings JD into a new light and makes him even more intimidating when he really gets into his psycho tendencies. Paired with some excellent vocals, Jacob Fowler is great in this role.
Billie Bowman gave a standout performance in the role of Heather Macnamara. Bowman's energy excels throughout the show and eyes were often drawn to her. Billie's rendition of 'Lifeboat' was a masterclass in acting through song for the audience to see, and the portrayal of her character throughout makes Heather 'Mac' a truly loveable character.
The energy of the performance as a whole really stepped up for act 2. This ended up making, in my opinion, Act 2 the better half of the show! It opened with two fantastic performances from Jay Bryce and Connor McFarlane as the Father's of Kurt and Ram singing 'Dead Gay Son'. This number was definitely a strong fan favourite.
Lighting design by Ben Cracknell always excites me, and this occasion was no different! Each state felt true to the scene on the stage and I found it lovely to watch - as always with Cracknell's work.
This nostalgic, fun and humorous production is a must-see for all Heathers fans, people who have seen the movie, and people who love going to the theatre, no matter the age. I think that heathers is enjoyable for older generations as well as the teens of today.
So go and see it! Tickets are available for the run at the Yvonne Arnaud, Guildford for the rest of the week before it heads off to its final venue.
Catch it while you can, It is a must-see!
