Frantic Assembly's 'Metamorphosis' - ***** Review!

Last Night, I attended the Press Night of Frantic Assembly’s ‘Metamorphosis’ at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford. Frantic assembly are widely known for their heavily physical style of theatre, and this production was no exception!

Metamorphosis is adapted by Lemn Sissay from Franz Kafka’s novella, and follows Gregor Samsa, a Salesman who works hard to relieve his family of debt. One morning Gregor goes through a change into a “dangerous, untouchable vermin”, and this affects the whole family. This production of ‘Metamorphosis’ was incredibly innovative and exciting. Every aspect of this left me sat there with my jaw dropped and my eyes wide.

Set design by Jon Bausor gave the actors a fantastic playground for this interesting story, and this is really used to its full potential.

Felipe Pacheco plays ‘Gregor Samsa’ and is truthfully the perfect choice for the role. Pacheco brings a great level of emotion and feeling, giving beautiful and mesmerising physicality which embodied the actual “metamorphosis” within the story perfectly.

Gregor’s Sister, ‘Grete’ is played by Hannah Sinclair Robinson and she brought some fantastic moments to the story, and the chemistry between herself and in the roles of Gregor and Grete was wonderful!

Every singular artistic choice, every movement, every sound was connected to create a thrilling piece of theatrical entertainment and it was gripping - not once did I look away!

The show as a whole is an incredibly impressive, and inspiring piece of theatre. If you are looking for something easy to watch, this is not it, as it is a show you need to concentrate on, but the result is something magnificent that will leave you in awe of Frantic Assembly and desperately booking tickets for their next production. ️️️️

'Metamorphosis' runs at the Yvonne Arnaud, Guildford until the 25th November and there are very few tickets remaining... So grab yours whilst the chance is there!!
