'Dazzling costumes and Beautiful Vocals' - Dreamgirls UK Tour Review

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing the UK touring production of ‘Dreamgirls’ on their press night at the Sunderland Empire. The evening as a whole was incredible and the performance blew me away completely.

From the set and the costumes, to the dancers and vocalists every single aspect of Dreamgirls is stunning.

Nicole Raquel Dennis leading the show as Effie White is perfect casting. Her rendition of ‘And I am telling you, I’m not going’ was full of soul and power. She truly gave her all and received a standing ovation after the song, which was so well deserved. Nicole’s powerful voice left the audience wanting more and her honest portrayal of the character was wonderful.

Holly Liburd standing in for Natalie Kassanga as Deena Jones gave a beautiful performance and her portrayal of the character was realistic and emotional. Holly’s vocals were amazing especially during ‘Listen’ which was incredible.

Lorrell Robinson, the third of the three original ‘Dreamettes’ was played by Paige Peddie. Her performance of this strong character really shines through, especially in Act 2 during ‘Ain’t no party’ with the audience cheering her on.

The Incredible Dom Hartley-Harris takes on the role of Curtis Taylor Jr. the stern and sly manager. He plays this role with so much charm and charisma and with no sense that the character thinks that he is doing anything wrong. It is such an honest portrayal of what the audience may consider the villain.

Brandon Lee Sears brings incomparable energy to the role of Jimmy ‘Thunder’ Early, a popular soul-singer. The audience loved his portrayal of this role and his performance throughout the character's downfall was always played so perfectly.

The leading performers are not the only thing that was amazing about this show. The ensemble kept the show lively with some incredible execution of mesmerising choreography by Casey Nicholaw.

Some gorgeous costumes designed by Tim Hatley gave the show the final bit of dazzle it needed, like the cherry on top of a cake.

Overall, Dreamgirls is a fabulous show, full of toe-tapping numbers, dazzling costumes and beautiful vocals. The emotion each and every performer poured out was wonderful.

If you can catch them on their tour, please do, I would fully recommend this show!
