Bonnie and Clyde - West End Review

I attended the matinee performance of ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ at the Garrick Theatre in London’s West End on Wednesday the 12th April. This production was everything I had hoped it to be and more - as a big fan of the soundtrack. The performances from this cast were all second to none and exceeded every expectation.

Jordan Luke Gage took on the role of wanted criminal ‘Clyde Barrow’. Gage plays the role with such incredible charisma. Each aspect of Clyde’s character was captured brilliantly and Jordan’s vocals were outstanding, giving a truly fantastic performance.

Lauren Jones, alternating in the role of “Ravishing Redhead” ‘Bonnie Parker’. Lauren’s portrayal of this character was both beautiful and honest. I urge you to see this wonderful pairing who had so much chemistry onstage and left the audience in floods of tears with their truthful and lovable performances.

Jodie Steele gave a standout performance as Blanche Barrow. Jodie has one of the greatest voices the west end has to offer and this is certainly showcased perfectly within this performance. Jodie uses hilarious elements of comedy as well as some heart wrenching emotion at points throughout the show, each one of these left the audience either giggling or sobbing. All of this goes along with Jodie Steele’s immense stage presence which is reflected in the thunderous applause she receives after every number.

George Maguire takes on the role of Clyde’s brother Buck Barrow. The relationship between Maguire and Gage onstage really excels making the pair a fantastic duo, particularly in the number “When I Drive”. George’s portrayal of Buck is wonderful from his vocals, to his characterisation and I am excited to see him in other productions.

The role of the preacher played by Dom Hartley-Harris brought some excellent vocals during numbers such as ‘Gods Arms are Always Open’ and ‘Made in America’. Having seen Dom perform in previous shows such as ‘RENT’ and ‘Dreamgirls’, I was excited to see what he would bring to this production and I was not at all disappointed.

Another reason that this production is so fantastic is the strong ensemble. Every single member of the ensemble plays multiple roles with fantastic differentiation and hilarious moments. They add extra detail and fun to the performance. With so much talent on one stage it was hard to know where to look during ensemble numbers.

I thought the use of video projection, designed by Nina Dunn gave an extra edge and meaning to the show, and the sound design by Tom Marshall paired with Zoe Spurr’s exceptional lighting topped off an already outstanding performance.

Overall, I urge anyone who can, to see this amazing show before it closes on the 20th May. If I had the chance I would absolutely go again. Each member of this cast is filled with endless talent and you are guaranteed to see an emotional, exciting and fulfilling performance no matter who is onstage.
