Last Night I had the pleasure of attending a performance of ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ on their UK tour at the Woking New Victoria Theatre. I saw this production back at the beginning of their tour in Guildford back in February - so.. How is the show holding up after a couple of months on the road?
In my opinion, this show could not get any better! After seeing an incredible performance in Guildford, I expected that this show was at its peak and doing insanely well. After seeing last nights performance everything has been further developed and polished which is fantastic to see even after such a small space of time.
From the very beginning of this show, you are drawn into the story of two criminal, outlaw lovers - Bonnie Parker & Clyde Barrow. This musical follows their story, how they met right to how they died and all the little details in between. Previously I gave this show 5 stars and if i could up that higher, i totally would after seeing the fun and exciting production that i saw last night.
Alex James Hatton does not disappoint in the role of Clyde Barrow. His cheeky, yet terrifying portrayal of this historical criminal. The moments in the show where he can change from a romantic lover into a manic psychopath in seconds is incredible and each aspect of the character has been developed so well. It was amazing to see Hatton’s portrayal again and he has sunk into this character very well.
Katie Tonkinson is the other half of this iconic duo, and another standout performance. I really enjoyed Tonkinson’s vocals - she has the most beautiful voice and has an immense star quality that really shines through on the stage. Tonkinson gives an elegant and emotional performance that is a masterclass in acting through song.
The role of Blanche Barrow was covered by Oonagh Cox at this performance and she was fantastic. It is always great to see a cover/understudy take to the stage and I always enjoy seeing a new portrayal of a role. Cox gives a fresh take of Blanche - bringing a well thought-out character filled with brilliant comedy moments and some heart-sinking emotion. In her final scene, she held the collective breath of the whole audience as she gave an outstanding performance.
Sam Ferriday is as great as ever as Buck Barrow, his hilarious and yet incredibly serious performance is a joy to watch and he truly lights up the stage. One of my favourite moments in the show is ‘When I Drive’ with Ferriday and Alex James Hatton both of whom bring a great amount of fun energy to the stage with this catchy number.
AJ Lewis takes on the role of the preacher, serving some impeccable vocals which had the audience whooping and cheering for more.
Each time I watch this show, I further appreciate the incredible work of director, Nick Winston. The way Winston has created this show is beautiful. Every scene, every sequence is smooth and well-developed in a way that it just fits. This direction paired with a punchy and funny book by Ivan Menchell and catchy numbers by Frank Wildhorn and Don Black this makes for a standout musical that I think will be on the run for a long time.
I cannot wait to see this production again when the new cast members join as it is a strong favourite of mine and I love to see new portrayals of these characters.
Overall, Bonnie and Clyde is a phenomenal production that I think is a must-see… so get some tickets whilst this show is on the run, This week in Woking: https://www.atgtickets.com/venues/new-victoria-theatre/
