Yesterday I had the honour of being invited to review ‘A Sudden Violent Burst of Rain’ at Paines Plough’s Roundabout at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
This production blew me away. Expertly written by Sami Ibrahim perfectly hits the mark and throws some strong political punches which landed perfectly on the audience leaving them with some deep thoughts upon leaving the theatre. Ibrahim’s use of comedy and strong messages throughout the performance really pushed to make this an important and unforgettable new piece of theatre that I urge you to see.
Sara Hazemi leads the show in the role of Elif, a sheep shearer for a rich landowner. Hazemi was outstanding in this role pushing through some of her strong emotions whilst brilliantly executing the comedy in Ibrahim’s writing. This was a standout performance for me as the characterisation of Elif was spot on.
Princess Khumalo took on the role of Elif’s daughter ‘Lilly’ as well as other roles throughout the story. Her comedic timing was impeccable and left the audience in stitches with some hilarious one-liners. On the other hand of this, Khumalo brought great emotion to her character when expressing some of her feelings within the tale.
Samuel Tracy completes the cast in the roles of The Landowner’s son and others. Tracy brings a whole new energy to the production and helps narrate the story with a marvellous talent for storytelling through his movement and voice.
The lighting design for this production, by Rory Beaton, was incredible. The effects used to create the scenes in the rain particularly were exciting to watch and helped the show stand out.
The minimalist set and significant use of props throughout combined with actors who are superbly talented make this show a must-see at the Fringe this year.
